We use data to improve the health of communities through community health needs assessments and implementation strategies…

June is Pride Month! To honor this, our team is critically reflecting on the origins of this activism, as well as the current issues at hand. We are continuously doing this across community member identity factors to ensure that our work is inclusive of all community members, but are focusing in particular this month on:

Community members who are lesbian (L), gay (G), bisexual (B), transgender (T), queer (Q), or who identify as part of sexual and/or gender diverse communities (+).

Visit this link for further details about terminology related to this topic.

Tips & Tricks of the Month

Looking for data on sexual orientation in your community?

This month’s tip is to review the US Census' Bureau’s June 2023 Press Release for LGBTQIA+ Pride Month. The article includes links to national, state, county, and zip code level data related to same-sex couples, and resources regarding the Bureau’s work with the LGBTQIA+ community.

Did You Know?

That sex and gender are not interchangeable terms, and understanding sex and gender is critical to understanding human health and disease?

Check out this article from the National Institutes of Health to learn more about the definitions of sex and gender, and why they matter in health research.

Public Health Need Spotlight

The unique health needs of LGBTQ+ community members,

There is much quantitative and qualitative health research evidence indicating that LGBTQ+ populations bear a greater burden of disease than their heterosexual and cis-gender counterparts. Full consideration of the health needs of this population is vital in addressing the discrimination, marginalization, and conditions that have undermined their health.

This article from the Boston School of Public Health explores the history of activism around LGBTQ+ rights, and outlines the critical role that the public health community can play in most effectively supporting the rights of transgender populations.

Public Health Organization Spotlight

We are placing a spotlight on Mental Health America this Pride Month, because they have added several amazing new resources to their website for LGBTQ+ community members, allies, and health professionals!
