In the news…
We value our face-to-face time for a few reasons, but one is for generating BIG ideas. While we made sure to have time for a little fun, we have A LOT lined up for this fall and needed to get to work (with our furry friends of course!).
One of our big focuses was on planning our trip to the Blue Mountains, Jamaica. We are so excited to share more details about how YOU can get involved in this initiative very soon.
Our next lunch and learn is on October 25, 2023 from 12-1pm ET and we can’t wait to announce the topic… Mark your calendars, registration details will be posted here soon!
Did you know?
People spend roughly 90% of their time indoors, with most of that time likely being in their home. This emphasizes the potential impact housing can have on a person’s health.
The science shows a number of key factors that shape the effect housing has on health, with the prominent themes being: quality & safety, affordability, neighborhood, and stability. For more information on these relationships, check out the linked article above!
PUBLIC HEALTH NEED SPOTLIGHT
Want to dig a little deeper into the complex public health need that is housing? Check out this article that examines the 4 pillars of housing influencing health equity.
The housing and neighborhood characteristics which can promote or harm our health are distributed inequitably, and this did not happen ‘naturally’! Click the link above and check out the infographic below to learn more about the inequities that exist across the dimensions of the housing health need.
TIPS & TRICKS OF THE MONTH
Want to integrate reporting on indicators of health related to housing into your community health assessment, but not sure where to start?
The Healthy People 2030 objectives from the US Department of Health and Social Services, outlines several health indicators related to housing and homes. Clear targets related to income spent on housing, household toxic exposures, and more are clearly outlined, and associated evidence-based strategies to address these health concerns are included.
public health organization spotlight
This month we are putting the spotlight on the World Health Organization (WHO), and particularly their Housing and Health Guidelines!
These global guidelines (focused on the quality & safety pillar within the housing health need), bring together the most recent evidence, providing practical recommendations to reduce health burden due to substandard and unsafe housing. It covers a variety of topics including environmental conditions in the home, hazard assessment, and accessibility.
mph favorites to share with you…
Stephanie recommends getting creative and sustainable with your home decor! Search ‘carpet remnants’ on Google and watch the magic happen! You are sure to find some resources in your local area that offer leftover portions of rugs that can be transformed into something new, instead of going to waste.
Allie recommends this great series on affordable housing from the city of Mansfield's local newspaper in Richland County, OH. This county happens to be one of our fabulous clients!
It covers some best practices and creative ideas from across the country, as well as the challenges Mansfield is facing with affordable, quality housing, and the solutions being proposed and implemented to address it.
This month Elissa recommends the hard-hitting podcast, Sold Out: Rethinking Housing in America. Grab your headphones and get ready to question assumptions that dictate how and where people live, through the storytelling of real people’s lives, while examining the barriers to change.
