MPH Newsletter, Vol. 3

We use data to improve the health of communities through community health needs assessments and implementation strategies…

We can’t believe it’s already March!

In honor of Women’s History Month, this edition of the newsletter spotlights some of the ways that public health uniquely applies to women. Our team is traveling to Toronto, Ontario, Canada to meet together and celebrate International Women’s Day - as a woman-owned and operated business, it’s a really big deal to us!

As always, our focus this month is to collect and transform data into actionable results. Reach out to us anytime to learn more about community health needs assessments and implementation strategies! Set up a FREE discovery call with us here.

Stay healthy,

Coming Up This Month…

Announcing… Our Women Supporting Women in Public Health Internship Program!

It started with our desire to bring a Master of Public Health student into our business… It ended with us establishing an entire internship program! We were overwhelmed with the number of fantastic skilled individuals that we connected with. Starting in March 2023, we will welcome cohorts of Master of Public Health students and early career public health professionals based in the US, into our first iteration of the program.

Learn more about the program by visiting the program webpage.

We are so excited to announce that we will be hosting our first ever virtual Lunch & Learn Session with CEO, Stephanie Moxley, on March 29, 2023!

The first of a series of sessions, Stephanie will dig into health needs assessment and community improvement topics relevant to our clients. Have a topic you’d like to discuss? Share it with us, we can’t wait to meet you!

In the News…

You’ve probably heard us say that our “secret sauce” is community collaboration.

Interested in learning more? Listen to CEO, Stephanie Moxley, speak about community and connection in public health on Dr. CH Huntley’s podcast, ‘Public Health Epidemiology Conversations’.

Their conversation last month has sparked our team to reflect on the various ways through which we can incorporate collaboration into all areas of MPH’s work!

Don’t miss the 2023 Colorado Public Health Association Culture of Data Virtual Conference! This meeting of community groups, academia, state/local government, healthcare entities and non-profit organizations, will focus on the goal of achieving health equity and the role that data plays. See you there!

Tips & Tricks of the Month

Wondering how to incorporate the unique public health needs of women into your research, policies, programs, or services?

Check out this resource on Gender-Based Analysis Plus from the Government of Canada. Often referred to as GBA+, this analytical process provides a method for assessing/quantifying the different experiences that men, women, and gender diverse people have.

Did You Know?

Did you know that women have always been leaders in the field of public health? Today, they comprise 76% of all healthcare workers in the United States.

To learn more about the historical contributions of women in public health, including the story behind the painting above, visit this resource hub from the Smithsonian!

Public Health Need Spotlight

“Child care challenges have become a barrier to work, especially for mothers, who disproportionately take on unpaid caregiving responsibilities when their family cannot find or afford child care.”

This quote from the article, “The Child Care Crisis is Keeping Women Out of the Workforce” by Leila Scochet, says it perfectly: access to childcare is a public health need, because without it a parent cannot work, leading to lack of health insurance, lack of income, and a variety of other challenges that impact health. And furthermore, this disproportionately affects women. Check out the article to learn more and view policy recommendations to address this public health need across the US.

Public Health Organization Spotlight

When you think about the Census Bureau, your mind may not automatically jump to “public health”, but ours do!

We use the open source data provided by the US Census Bureau every day and consider them an important public health organization. By following the link you have access to data regarding the health needs of Americans across the nation. And one of the best parts… they offer information disaggregated by sex!

MPH FAVOURITES TO SHARE WITH YOU…

Just over one year has passed since the public health community lost a pioneer, Dr. Paul Farmer. In honor of his passing, this month Stephanie recommends the documentary “Bending the Arc” (available on Netflix). This moving account of how ‘Partner’s in Health’ became a leading public health organization gives life to the meaning of health equity.

This month Allie is bringing more useful directories to help you make informed decisions about the businesses that you support in your community! Supporting Women of Color Entrepreneurs - WOCE, We Are Women Owned, Femmebought, and Women Owned Directory are all web resources that grant instant access to information about women-owned businesses near you. What are you waiting for?

With women’s issues on her mind this month, Elissa recommends something that she discovered as a woman but wish she knew about as a girl… Knix Underwear for that time of the month! Tampons & cups never worked for her, and as a professional dancer for many years, pads were just too bulky. Knix underwear has period protection built in, so you never have to worry about “leakage” again. No woman should feel held back by her period!
