Tips & Tricks of the month
Think of community health needs assessments as a process, rather than simply a product. To be most effective, a CHNA needs to be repeated and evaluated on an ongoing basis. As you are conducting your CHNA, consider how it will be repeated and evaluated over time. This will allow for ease of evaluation and improvement of your CHNA process.

Access to Mental Health Care
The ability to access quality mental health care is a social determinant of health, and is an integral part of an individual’s well-being. According to a 2021 study that analyzed barriers to healthcare access for US adults, those with severe psychological distress were more likely to experience barriers than those without severe psychological stress. This further emphasizes the need for equitable mental health care access, particularly for those most affected by psychological distress and barriers to care.
public health organization spotlight
Named one of Nicholas Kristof’s 2022 Holiday Impact Prize winners for 2022, Vision to Learn is a non-profit organization that “provide[s] vision screenings, eye exams and glasses to children in low-income communities, at no cost to the children or their families”. Through collaboration with school districts, this organization makes it easy for students to access eye care, with work in 17+ states. Do you have data on access to eye care and eye glasses for children in your community? Do the children in your community have the glasses they need to succeed in school and lead healthy lives?
